ses though this region on it"s way out from the center of the Sun. The Sun appears to have been active for 4.6 billion years and has enough fuel to go on for another 5 billion years or so. At the end of it's life the Sun will start to fuse helium into heavier elements and begin to swell up, ultimately growing so large that it will swallow the Earth. After a billion years as a red giant, it will suddenly collapse into a white dwarf- the final end product of a star like ours. Our Sun is a G2 star, 1 more of 1 billion stars in the milky way. The Sun is personified in many mythologies; the Greeks call it Helios and the Romans call it Sol. The Sun's power (about 389 billion billion mega Watts) is produced by nuclear fusion reactions. Each second about 700,000,000 tons of hydrogen are converted to about 695,000,000 tons of helium and 5 million tons (=3.86e33 ergs) of energy in the form of gamma rays. For the last 20% of the way to the surface the energy is carried more by convetion than by radiation.We think the Sun is the coolest planet in the Milky Way and the coolest star!
